UCSBHello! My name is Sylvain Hallé, and I am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Computer Science at University of California Santa Barbara. Prior to that, I completed a a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Université du Québec à Montréal. Welcome to my homepage!

For those of you who speak French, I have a French version of this page.

Breaking news: starting at the end of January 2010, I will be Assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Canada. Stay tuned for more information!

Research/Academic Info

This takes up most of my time. My research interests are currently: distributed computing, automated validation of web applications, logical aspects of network configuration, automated theorem proving and computational (proof) complexity.

Since September 2008, I am funded by a postdoc scholarship from the Fonds Québécois de recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQRNT). Prior to that, I was funded by a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postgraduate Scholarship. You may want to read:

The SMAC Project

SMAC

I am also the production director for the project Sciences et mathématiques en action (SMAC) led by Université Laval's math professor Jean-Marie De Koninck. The double mission of SMAC is to increase the interest for mathematics and sciences in youths and demystify mathematics for the general public.

As director, I am responsible of developing the scientific and multimedia content for the show-conference ShowMath, for developing the project's web site and the supervision of the development of the online educational game Math en jeu. After only six months of existence, SMAC project's head Jean-Marie De Koninck was named Scientist of the Year 2005 by the French division of CBC.

Software/Tools

Some small and large tools I developed for my own use:

  • daDrill is a web-based graphical tool for managing a collection of bibliographical references. daDrill supports import/export of the references in the BibTeX format.
  • Part-time Logger, a time logging utility for people like me who share their time between multiple projects and want to gather stats

More tools and things are available on the tools page.

Miscellaneous

Well, everything that did not fit above and that I still want to appear somewhere on my site.

Some highly significant thoughts that might change your life (but keep that secret)
